July 1st is Canada Day, celebrating the country’s 142nd birthday.

Here are some events and festivals that are happening around the Lower Mainland:

Canada Place

Celebrate Canada Day at one of Vancouver’s most recognizable landmarks, Canada Place. Located on the waterfront of Burrard Inlet, at the end of Burrard Street, Canada Place offers spectacular views of the city, and during the July 1st celebrations, a big street party.

Why should I go?

- Citizenship Ceremony – Watch as new Canadians are sworn in. Free cake for everyone!

- 20TENT – Experience the various sports to be played at the 2010 Olympics.

- Burrard Inlet Fireworks Show – Cap off the night with a fireworks show over Vancouver’s beautiful Burrard Inlet. Show is at 10:30pm

Steveston Salmon Festival

Combine your love of delicious fish and Canada at the 64th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival in Richmond. Evolved from a local sports day, the Salmon Festival has grown to become one of the largest Canada Day celebrations in B.C.

Why should I go?

- Festival Parade – Starting at 10am from Garry Point park, the parade includes over 100 floats and submissions.

- Youth Rock Fest – Check out and support some of B.C.’s up and coming youth bands.

- Salmon BBQ – It’s not a salmon festival without expertly barbe qued fish to enjoy. A piece of salmon, salad and a bun is $12, with a $1 refund if you recycle your plate.

Surrey Canada Day Celebration

Touted as the largest celebration in Western Canada, Surrey is putting on quite the impressive line up. Festivities start at 10am at the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre.

Why should I go?

- Main stage Performances – Surrey is rocking some big name Canadian talent like 54-40, Biff Naked and Carlie RaeJepsen.

- 2010 Celebration Zone – A taste of what 2010 activities will be like in Surrey.

- Fireworks Spectacular – End the night with a bang. Fireworks show at 10:15pm over the main stage.
